No drinking and driving *and* you have to wear a seatbelt? I thought we were free!

The fact that the modern world is (relatively) safe is thanks in large part to the fuck-ups of previous generations. Every generation includes a series of people screwing up, realizing that they screwed up, then passing laws or advising others not to do the things that they did. It’s just how life works, and it’s the reason you can drink water from your tap without having to worry about it being laced with arsenic.

That said, while many of these measures seem sensible now, this wasn’t necessarily the case when they were introduced. Take, for example, this clip from a news report about the introduction of drunk driving laws — and how these people thought that their implementation was a sign of the rising spectre haunting the United States: communism.
