TikTok is full of experts whose qualifications seem to amount to “dude, trust me.”

Usually, this stuff is relatively harmless — if you want to think that liking pizza means you have daddy issues, be my guest. However, other times, it can be downright dangerous. Take the case of Doctor Matthew Lani, who previously had a career as a TikTok influencer. On his page, he would wear medical scrubs while promoting cures and giving advice from the perspective of a doctor.

He would also show the everyday goings-on in a doctor’s life, such as calling a co-worker to discuss a patient’s case. Sure, this violates pretty much every privacy rule in the books, but it’s a fun insight into a doctor’s life, right?

You probably already know where this is going. Matthew Lani is not a doctor. Not even close. And now, he’s been arrested for pretending to be a medical professional.

According to the BBC, pretty much everything Lani said about his life is fake. “Mr. Lani says he received a medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. The institution says this is not the case.”

But his videos look like they’re filmed in a hospital! Well, as it turns out, you can just walk into hospitals and start filming — something Lani apparently did on several occasions.

“Mr. Lani frequently used the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg where he was caught to ‘curate misleading content under the pretense that he was a qualified doctor,’” explains author Danai Nesta Kupemba, citing a statement from Gauteng province's Department of Health.

This love of entering hospitals to film TikTok content appears to have led to his downfall. Once word got out about Lani, police began a search to try to find the fake Doc. Lani, however, still attempted to make content, getting caught while sneaking through hospital security wearing a surgical mask and stethoscope.

In response, Lani’s lawyers appear to be going for the “this was all for entertainment” defense. The lawyer also seems to say that they’re considering suing the hospital where he used to film. Shoot for the stars, I guess.

While his initial charges were dropped, a second case was just opened against him. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Who knows? Maybe we’ll find out he’s a lawyer as well.
